Teach the whole child. The CDC reported that, in 2020, there was a 24% increase in 5 to 11-year-old children and a 31% increase in 12 to 17-year-old children who visited the emergency room because of mental health issues. One in four teens reported an increase in losing sleep, feeling depressed, feeling constantly under strain, or experiencing a loss of confidence in themselves [America's Promise]. Mental health has always been a concern for children, but in recent years even prior to the pandemic, we've seen an increase in mental health issues. Children spend 8 hours/day, 5 days/week, in school. Why are mental health and social/emotional well-being not prioritized in schools despite children spending the majority of their time there? I believe all children, not just at-risk youth, can benefit from SEL, mindfulness, and self-regulation and monitoring being taught and supported in schools. It is my mission as a teacher to identify and supporting students who need help, and to spread an overall more positive message regarding mental health issues.
