A Netflix Film Study: The Cat in The Hat
This is a Netflix film study of the Cat in the Hat with a focus on characterization, comprehension, attention to detail, theme, and description of settings, events, and characters. Reading Strategy- Empathize to Understand
This reading strategy asks students to think about how their own experiences might be the same or different from a character in the story. The steps are broken down into a graphic organizer with sentence starters to help the students consider the emotions, motivations, and feelings of a character in a book.

This reading strategy is helpful for students to look at various actions that characters do in the text- what do these interactions mean? What do these actions tell you about a character?

Reading Strategy- What's Your Problem?
This strategy is helpful for determining a conflict in a story based on multiple criteria. It does require that a teacher has taught various forms of conflict in literature (Person vs. Person, Person vs. Nature, etc.). Students should be able to determine the problem in the story, what causes the problem, the type of conflict it is, and how it relates to the character, setting, or theme.

Reading Strategy- Look for a Pattern
This graphic organizer allows students to think about how a characters actions do or do not change through the course of a text. By looking at patterns in a characters actions, students can determine various character traits based on their actions. For example, if Character A keeps interrupting Character B, then a student can determine that Character A is insensitive or bossy.
