Description

NOTE: To help teachers get digital versions of these activities faster, I have made this collection available in TPT Digital Activities by adding text boxes with the new TPT Digital Tool.

OVERVIEW:

This product is available as part of a bundle for Collection 3 as well as individually sold here.

These interactive notebook activities are a fun way to help your students understand personification and dialect via the story “The Banana Tree.” Additionally, there are writing opportunities to cite text evidence, analyze short stories and write an original description of their own. Filled with cute illustrations and step-by-step directions, these activities are specifically designed to enhance the "The Banana Tree" selection from Collections Grade 6.

Common core-based lesson plans, rubrics and keys are all included as well as easy to cut pieces that save time. Every teacher has their own preference for notebook types. So, I have decided to design as a full 8 ½”X 11” inch page, which can be reduced on a copier by 75% to fit composition notebooks but would require trimming. I usually print off two pages per sheet on the copier and then cut in half, so I only have 1 cut and it fits perfectly into the composition book.

THESE ACTIVITIES INCLUDE:

Vocabulary Notes and Activities

The vocabulary words in this selection are paired with four different options of activities teachers/students can choose from to complete. The notes contain a key for easy class presentation.

Plot and Character Activities

To assist students in comprehension of this story and to review plot and character analysis, these activities can be completed either as a class or independently, contingent on the level of proficiency of your students.

Figurative Language Notes and Activities

For guided notetaking and support as well as encouraging independent writing, these activities help students to understand imagery, personification and dialect as well as their impact on meaning. Students will also evaluate the use of imagery in the story in a written assignment.

Capitalization Notes

These notes are to review capitalization rules.

Performance Task: Writing a Description

A brainstorming page as well as a place for writing a description of a bad storm allows students to express themselves in this culminating activity.

Rubrics

Standards-based rubrics included for each writing assignment, which allows students to understand what they have accomplished or need to revise to improve their writing. I usually allow students to revise if they receive a 2 or lower (for me a 2 is a C) for a higher score (or grade).

This product was developed by an award-winning, highly qualified teacher and 21-year veteran of the classroom, with ESL and ESE certification. I use these materials with my students in my classroom, so I know what students respond to and I try to make materials in which ALL students can be successful.

ORGANIZATION OF INTERACTIVE NOTEBOOK MATERIALS:

In this resource, you will find a variety of Interactive Notebook activities that will support your students’ understanding of the Collections textbook.

Lessons Pages are the TEACHER input pages that are designed to be used as the right-hand side pages of the notebook. However, you can use them anyway you want. These lessons coincide with the lessons in the textbook that appear after every selection, however, they are recreated as an engaging guided notetaking activity with fun illustrations. Keys are provided for these resources, unless students are supposed to come up with the ideas as a class.

Activity Pages are the STUDENT output pages that are designed to be used on the left-hand side pages of the notebook. These often include writing, drawing, graphic organizers, etc. Rubrics for all writing assignments are included.
