Romeo and Juliet Mock Trial Project

Created by
Paul Hricik
A mock trial is an excellent way to engage a student’s critical thinking skills, and persuasive writing skills, and challenge their knowledge of a sequence of events. In Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, several violent deaths occur and at the end of the play it’s ambiguous who will be punished and how. Therefore, to engage students in the play, they can play judge, jury, and lawyers in a trial to answer the question: was Friar Laurence guilty of performing an illegal marriage?

Good citizenship is a virtue. Awarding students when caught doing something positive and nice for others should be recognized and publicily displayed - especially inside classrooms and/or notes given to parents and/or guardians. The opposite has been the norm when students have been "caught" behaving not so wonderful. This form also allows the students to "turn themselves in" when they too recognize positive behavior by themselves or others. This is a student friendly form designed for student

I use this to have my students prepare for a weekly conversation about the news. Every Friday, we watch "The Week in Rap" (Flocabulary) and talk about what happened in the news. You might ask students to attach a copy of the news story. I differentiate by allowing them to watch, read, or listen to the news. If you have a computer station in your classroom, this could easily be a part of "Read to Self" if students use something like Time for Kids or New York Times for Kids. Could also be adapted

As a former Civics and Government teacher, I wanted to find a way to get to know my students and their political knowledge and interests. A few years ago, I created this political style "About Me" Survey to give my students at the beginning of the course. Having this knowlege on hand helped me to address the elephant (or donkey) in the room, political disagreements. By allowing my students to be open and honest with me up front about their feelings about their government, politics, and the coun
