Kentucky Derby Activities {QR Codes, YouTube Videos, Picture Books

I wanted to create a day centered around the Kentucky Derby since it is a local event that is known world wide. Many of my students don't know much about the Derby and we are only 45 minutes away from Louisville, Kentucky. In this unit, you will find QR codes that have videos where students (or the class) can watch about the History of the Kentucky Derby, Listen to the Call to the Post, Listen to the song “My Old Kentucky Home,” and hear many horse related picture books read aloud on YouTube.

They always enjoy it, but I've found that the "The Mayflower Voyagers", which tells the historically accurate story of the Pilgrims first Thanksgiving is even more popular. It can be found as the "Bonus Feature" on the "A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving" DVD. This is a little assessment I wrote to test the kids' knowledge of the first Thanksgiving. There are 2 versions: one with a word box and one with a reflection task. Hope you

Who doesn't love to learn (and teach!) with videos? Often students want to "tell" the reader what happens in a story, rather than using descriptive details in their writing. These worksheets follow the Pixar short, "Mike's New Car" in which students are required "show" what happens in the video versus "telling" the reader. Given six "telling" examples from the video, students will be able to use their own creative ideas to come up with describe details including body movements, facial expressi
