Test My Genes Lab: Students Use Their Traits to Practice Punnett Squares - NGSS

Created by
Next Gen Sci Guy
In Brief: The lab proceeds as follows1. Students complete a short matching section using important genetics terms2. Students read about five different human traits (Interlacing of fingers, PTC tasting, Presence of Palmaris Longus Muscle, Hair Texture, and Color Vision)3. Students attempt to determine their genotpyes, based upon their phenotypes, and the information in the lab.4. Students perform Punnett Squares using their genotypes, in order to make predictions about future generationsA. NEXT

The Reward Path, Pathology of Addiction, Mouse Party Worksheet with KEY

Created by
Biology Boutique
This is a 4-page Word document - the first 2 pages are the assignment, the next two pages are the KEY. I created this assignment to go along with a website and a YouTube video - all awesome, interesting stuff! The first part of the assignment, "The Reward Path", uses an interactive website at the University of Utah Genetics Learning Center. Students move through interactive and answers questions about the how your brain behaves when it needs something - like food, and eating a cheeseburger.

This is a comprehensive Periodic Table Lab Activity Simulation for students. There are 3 documents: 1) Lab Introduction Document with Questions and setting the context to examine unknown elements from the Planet Pumpernickel 2) 9 page flash cards of unknown alien elements that have element properties of atomic radius, electronegativity, ionization energy, conductivity, electron configuration, etc. 3) Answer Key for the most consistent element arrangement I found this to be most successful when

Gene Therapy: Space Doctor Virtual Lab

This lab is completed using two free online resources provided by the University of Utah. These are interactive websites that enable students to take on the roll of "space doctors" who are tasked with treating alien patients using gene therapy. This virtual lab teaches students how gene therapy works and how it can be used to treat genetic disorders. This lab can be completed in the classroom or at home using a computer with internet access. The lab is provided in word-document format so that yo

Persuading with Data: Using data bias to your advantage

Created by
House of Science
The activity is designed as a follow-up to my Data Bias activity (posted for free). Student use what they learned about data bias to create data presentations (graphs, charts) that help prove their point. Multiple scenarios are given where students are trying to convince their parents that their grades/behavior aren't bad. This activity helps students internalize the power of data bias and makes them more likely to look out for this bias in the real world. This makes for a really fun homew

States of Matter- PHET Simulation

NGSS Expectation:MS-PS1-4: Develop a model that predicts and describes the changes in particle motion, temperature, and state of a pure substance when thermal energy is added or removed. This lab has students making observations of what happens to molecules during phase changes. They will observe the movement various molecules in the simulation to make connections with the previous labs they have done on temperature of fluids to explain why phase changes occur (forming or breaking molecular attac

QR code Kinetic and Potential Energy Activity

This activity requires a QR code reader on either a smart phone or IPAD. Students scan the QR code; which brings up a picture showing either kinetic or potential energy. The students then need to answer questions about energy by examining the pictures.

Online Simulation of Natural Selection = Evodots!

This is a great computer model of what factors affect natural selection. Students are "predators" and eat dots on the screen. They collect data on how the population changes over time and how variation, population size, and heritability of a trait affect how the population changes over time. The guide I've created here leads students through the simulation and provides embedded as well as summative questions to check for understanding.

Coaster Lab

Amanda Phillips
This lesson uses the Jason Digital Lab Coaster Creator to teach students about the transfer of potential and kinetic energy. Students will construct a roller coaster and then make modifications to improve the design. If the coaster does not have enough energy it will not make it to the end and too much energy will cause a crash. The lab sheet includes questions, drawing the coaster, and a data table for students to easily compare multiple trials.

Punnett Squares & Genetics Virtual Lab

Students complete this lab by using the provided link on the lab handout. This virtual lab covers the basics of Punnett squares, genotype, and phenotype. Students design a jungle creature and complete Punnett squares for each trait. Students must then analyze the results and their Punnett squares and answer analysis questions. Great introductory lab to genetics to get students engaged while using online resources! This lab is in a word document format so that you can easily adapt it to meet the
