My 7th grade ELA class combines our argumentative writing unit with a mock trial based on the short story "Lamb to the Slaughter" by Roald Dahl. In our trial, we put the main character Mary Maloney on trial for the murder of her husband. We do two trials per class over the course of two days so every student gets the opportunity to be a part of the trial as well as be a part of the jury. Students will be given a budget that you create. They must choose one option of the five to spend their money on after they pay their bills. Once they make their choice, they must explain why they made their decision. I usually give them an index card with an amount and then write their rent, utilities, car, etc. on it and ask them to make the deductions. You can also give them one amount to save time.

In this activity, students will act as an investigator/detective as they observe the interactive website of Ford's Theatre. Students make observations and draw inferences based on their observations.
