This is Your Brain on Figurative Language: Brain-Science of Metaphors & Similes

Do you know what a simile is? A metaphor? If you do, you can probably give me a hand with these definitions:• A simile is a comparison that uses “like” or “as.”• A metaphor is a comparison that does NOT use “like” or “as.” Now that we’re all on the same page, I have to offer a confession: I taught figurative language using these two definitions for a huge chunk of my teaching career. I never realized I was stuck in a rut. These textbook explanations blocked me from seeing that symbolic language

Here is an in-depth, thought-provoking Bible-based fictional dramatization of 7 pages in length (20-30 minutes) to be performed for high school students to elderly parishioners in a Protestant or Catholic school and/or church setting during the Christmas season. I wrote the text and it has been performed twice, garnering very positive feedback. It calls for seven acting roles performing monologues. A terrific undertaking for students and adults in terms of acting and presentation of a powerful

Ant Chant for insect unit

This is a short army type chant. It can be used to help kids remember important facts about ants. Very cute for a short little production for a talent show or awards assembly. It was written with The Ants Go Marching tune in mind, but is to be done as a cool chant. I have done this with 1st-3rd grade. We always march out to the baby version of the song and then put on sunglasses for the actual performance. The kids love it!

Except for the alternate skill: analyze author's purpose on page 11 (paragraph 24), the student prompts and teacher guides align with the paragraphs.
