Fireworks: Trigonometry Inquiry Project

Created by
Mitchell Zuvela
In this inquiry-based project, students will learn how to use basic trigonometric functions such as cosine, tangent and sine to find the missing side distances and angles of a right-angle triangle.Students will explore how fireworks of varying heights will affect the viewing angle and line of sight for the viewing audience.Students will design their own fireworks show that will include 4 different colours of fireworks. Each firework choice has a differing explosion height, which will slightly ch

Common Core Geometry Project (G.SRT.6 & G.SRT.8 Trigonometry in the Real World)

The problems and activities within this document are designed to assist students in achieving the following standards: G.SRT.6 & G.SRT.8 as well as the standards for mathematics practice and the literacy standards. They are also designed to help the teacher assess the students’ abilities when it comes to working with the ideas within the standards. This document contains the following: - project directions - scoring rubric - C.S.I. Application - "Help the Crime Scene Investigators" section

I like to call this activity Putt-Putt-Geometry. It is 9 glorious holes of trigonometry application! This works great as a Trig unit project, end of year project, or test review (maybe 1 or 2 holes for review). The students can work in groups, pairs, or individuals. If your students are not proficient with Trig, or you have not covered it yet, each hole can be done using the Pythagorean Theorem instead - simply tweak the directions a bit. I hope your students enjoy this as much as mine do!

Project and Rubric - Real World Math (The Pythagorean Theorem)

"In math class, you have learned about the Pythagorean Theorem. You have also seen examples of how the Pythagorean Theorem is used in ‘real life.’ For this task you will create your own “real life” Pythagorean Theorem word problem and model using the following steps..." Students will create and solve their own word problem, construct a 3D model of their scenario, and then write a reflection on their process and experience. *Rubric is included. *This project was created in collaboration with c

This lab is very fun and exciting! The bonus is you get to go outdoors. You will use a standard water balloon launcher to calculate the maximum height a balloon went after being launch as well as the velocity of the balloon. There are two parts to the lab. Part 1 involves collecting data and building a graph. Part 2 is calculating velocity and maximum height. ENJOY!!

Included are six fantastic geometry projects that are great for honors projects or extra credit. Ideas include using proportion to create body organs, writing children's story books with shapes, and creating a catering restaurant menu. These ideas and rubric took many hours of work and have paid dividends with students.

This is an activity to see how tall objects are using indirect measurement. After working the 3 problems for practice, then head outside to measure how tall the school's flagpole is.We are using indirect measurement as an application of trig functions.**can be used as a group project for measuring other tall items outdoorMaterials needed for activity:• Tape Measure• Clinometer/hypsometer• Measuring tapeAnswers to worksheet: Example: 10 m1. 15.5 ft2. 19.3 mYou can earn FREE TPT money by leaving r

Discover trigonometric functions through objects around our lives. Students will take pictures of objects where they can model using the basic trigonometric functions and their transformations. The document is editable. The idea is to assign students in groups and work on a photo project together. They are supposed to observe trigonometric functions in real life, take pictures, and create a function that models the real object. Teachers should encourage students to incorporate transformation o

This is a cooperative learning activity for groups of two to create and solve their own word problem to use the Pythagorean Theorem to find a missing length. It should be given after students are familiar with Pythagorean Theorem word problems and after examples are provided. The teacher's initials are needed before moving to the next step to make sure the problem is reasonable. The last two steps require construction of a poster and presentation of the poster. The sheet is to be double-sided an

This activity is a handout for students to go outside of the classroom (or, inside if you prefer), to use the tangent ratio to find the height of unknown objects, such as a flag pole, a tree, or their own scenario. Students will need to make an inclinometer in order to complete this activity.

This is a project for students to create and solve their own word problems to use the Pythagorean Theorem to find the hypotenuse and a leg (2 separate problems). Each step includes an example and students must obtain approval from the teacher before moving on to ensure that the problem is reasonable. Students then create a poster of their problems.
