16-Beat Rhythm Composition Template
This template is an easy to use 4 measure, 16 beat planner. This is great to use individually or in groups. The students write the rhythms they choose, then they can play them on a non-pitched percussion instrument. This projects allows students to take autonomy of their own learning and use all of the tools they have learned throughout our recorder unit to apply to their own music. The students absolutely loved creating their own pieces and on the day it was due I set up a "stage" to create a fun environment for the groups to perform their music. I Can Write Music! Kindergarten Rhythm and Melody Compositions
A super-simple way to let your kindergarten students show that they can write their own rhythm and melody patterns!
Step by step instructions are included.
Students draw shapes to show long sounds, short sounds, high sounds and low sounds (ta, ti-ti, so, and mi).
The best approach is to do the rhythm pattern in one lesson and the melody pattern in another lesson.
If classroom instruments are available, let the students play their compositions on instruments!

Christmas Tree: A Project Based Lesson for Rhythm Composition
This is a project based learning lesson. This lesson utilizes a melody from the Music for Children volumes utilized in the Orff-Schulwerk process. The melody is not written out in this lesson due to copyright. The words and lesson process are written by myself.

Brown Bear, Brown Bear Composition Activity
For this activity, I read/ sing the book "Brown Bear, Brown Bear" with my students. We sing this using a so-mi-la pattern. The pattern I use is So-Mi So-Mi So-La-So-Mi.
I provide each student with a copy of this worksheet. Students write their own sentence (creating their own lyrics) using the sentence stem provided (scaffolding which helps ELL students). They also draw a picture of what their lyrics are describing.
