Pumpkinology

This unit is set up for studying pumpkins. The students use parts of the scientific method to study the pumpkin. They are asked to observe, guess if it will sink or float, estimate certain parts of the pumpkin and then actually measure or count those parts. They also do a little research to find out if the pumpkin is a fruit or vegetable.

In this experiment, the students learn about the basics of probability and what happens depending on the sample size. The students predict based on a sample what is in their bag and then find out if the are correct. Then using the actual data the students calculate probabilities based on individual, group and class results. They graph this information as well. There are questions along with this activity that ask why and get at their thinking. In the end they compare the class results wit

Testing Your Reaction Time

In this activity, students will explore reaction time. Students test their reflexes by seeing how quickly they can grasp a falling ruler. This activity will help students learn about the scientific method as they record data, average the results, and draw conclusions. In addition, this makes a great STEM lead in activity! This pdf includes a presentation as well as forms for students to record data.

Probability with M&M's

In this class activity, students will use M&Ms to investigate the difference between experimental and theoretical probability. Each student should receive a bag with 50 M&Ms. In the first part of the activity, students calculate the experimental probability by tallying the number of times they choose each color when picking 50 times with replacement. They then count the exact number of each color to determine the theoretical probability. In part 2 of the activity, students compare t

Finding MEAN in a concrete manner! This was a real "aha" moment for my students in actually understanding the concept of mean. Students are asked to fill graduated cylinders (or beakers) with water to the following amounts (in mL): 70, 30, 90, 20, 50. Then they fill in the corresponding amount with colored pencil on the worksheet. Students are asked to distribute the water in the cylinders so that each of the containers has the same amount of liquid and record the amount in each cylinder.

The charting meets several CCSS for math and NGSS for science. In addition this is great for challenging and motivating students to add more nutritious plants to their diet or try new foods they might not otherwise. This would make a great collaborative morning meeting plan to share their results and create class charts/data to analyze
