This is a collection of poetry station (center) activities to go along with the poem Bats. There are 5 activites included which keep my kids busy and excited during their poetry station time. I usually glue page 1 on a folder to let the kids know what poem is in the folder. I copy pg. 3 on regular paper for the kids to use to glue and practice writing the poem. I copy the rest of the pages on card stock and laminate them. I put the instructions (pg. 2) in the folder. I also cut apart (pg. 6)

I used this game with students and they loved seeing how quickly they could get through all the cards after freshly shuffling them. It ties very subtly to their Shakespeare unit (rhyming Macbeth with Breath). This game was used as a warm up before a rhyming poetry lesson, though it could be used as a warm before any rhyming lesson! Print and laminate then cut in half. Poetic Device Scavenger Hunt

Distribute some poems and have students identify and highlight poetic devices like similes, metaphors, alliteration, onomatopoeia, and imagery. Discuss what these are and the overall impact on the reader's experience.

Poetry Analysis Jigsaw

Divide students into small groups, assigning each group a different poem. Have each group analyze the assigned poem's themes, tone, and literary devices, and present their findings to the class.

Poetry Slam or Performance

Organize a poetry slam where students can perform poems they’ve written themselves or those written by famous poets. This will help build confidence and strengthen their public speaking skills.

Writing Poetry from Different Perspectives

Ask students to write a poem from the perspective of an inanimate object or an animal to foster empathy and encourage creative, out-of-the-box thinking.
