Tall Tale Lesson: John Henry +10 Reading Comprehension Multiple Choice Questions
In this mini-lesson students read a selection to see why a folk song was written about the tall tale hero, John Henry. Then they answer ten multiple choice questions by putting a circle around each correct answer. Along with two colorful drawings of John Henry being a steel driving man, you get two pages of informational text and three stanzas of the John Henry folk song. Poetry Mini-Unit I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings (Print and Go!)
I use this resource with my 5th grade class to introduce the lovely poem by Maya Angelou. Mini unit includes a page for students to summarize, determine adjectives for the free vs. caged bird, imagine the differences in how the two birds feel, information about the author, how metaphor is used in the poem, a discussion page on other ways people are "caged", and an oral language rubric if so choose to use it as such.

Writing Assignments over Racism and Stereotypes (Personal Narratives)
Two different writing assignments where students choose a prompt and write about their own personal experiences with racism or stereotypes and reflect upon those experiences. I included a guide for students to use to help them organize their thoughts. I use this when reading themed passages and novels having to do with racism and stereotypes. Radio Station Broadcast
Grade 7 or 8 Music Lab unit that has worked very well for me. Kids are in groups of 4-5, and will develop a 30-minute broadcast that they will present to the class. Can focus on a year or a decade and will include music from the time period, as well as news, sports, traffic, weather and ads. Meeting every other day, this takes 3-4 weeks to complete.
