how to use the Order or Operations when solving multi-step equations Lesson Plan

Created by
Kayla Flagg
Throughout this lesson, the students will use basic skills of adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing and apply these skills to solve multi-step equations using the order of operations. The students will be asked to define mathematical words such as sum, difference, product and quotient. This lesson will also require students to think critically when writing an equation sentence; i.e. 10 times the sum of 36 and 72.

Common Core Orders of Operation

This is a 6 page lesson plan that start with a warm-up, goes into notes, and ends with a fun coloring activity on Orders of Operations. Students will see PEMDAS broken down and get to explain each piece. Finally, the will complete an activity where they have to put PEMDAS into use and then find the correct answer to color on a coordinating coloring sheet. This lesson plan aligns with Common Core Standards for 5th and 6th grades. This is a great review activity for 7th and 8th graders.

Workng with students with a variety of learning disabilities makes me reinvent everything. This is my order of operations unit. I do it on the graph paper so the students are required to keep the numbers lined up and follow the steps. I use this graph paper so they have a large space to show their work, there are only a few questions on a page so they don't get overwhelmed. I follow the BEDMAS rules to keep the steps fresh in their mind.
