When teaching place value, I like to use this graphic. I tell the students a story that "large numbers are built like houses on a street. In the first house, there were three children named one, ten, and hundred. When the second house was built, a problem arose. The children in that home had the same names. Therefore, when their parent called they had to add their last name thousand." And the story continues from there. Enjoy!
