The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down (Anne Fadiman) reading guide
This is one of my favorite books of all time, and I simply adore teaching it. It is complex enough that I only do it with one (or two) of my highest guided reading groups at the end of 8th grade, and the guide is a huge help. This guide is geared toward high school readers and prompts empathy and reflection on the way Fadiman presents her subjects. As an English major and sociology minor who studied abroad in Southeast Asia (with a spouse in the medical field), I appreciate Fadiman's approach. M

Science Extension Their Eyes Were Watching God
Use this product as an extension activity to the novel Their Eyes Were Watching God. Strengthen students' understanding of Hurston’s tree motif connecting Janie to the pear tree by investigating the science behind how trees communicate with one another. Make these connections text to text and text to self by using clips from the movie Avatar and ecologist Suzanne Simard’s Ted Talk “How trees to each other.”
