A Rubric for participation in a group or whole class discussion. Six categories include: Listening, Responding, Language, Cooperation, Content, and Thinking.

Types:
Rubric and Lesson for a Socratic Seminar
Teacher reviews the Socratic Seminar rules from rubric while students listen. Students sit in a circle and only speaks when they have the soft stuffed animal or talk piece. No one should be interrupted and must only voice their own opinion in response to the question only. Questions may change depending on topic.

Three Star Question Criteria
This document lists the criteria for different levels of questioning. Students in my class generate questions based on what they have read or learned using this criteria as a guide. With some practice, students are able to ask higher level questions that lead to more in depth discussions. Often I have students generate questions as a "ticket out of class". I will use these questions to review and to continue discussion on a topic during the next class.

Student-friendly Single Target Rubric: Maintaining Objective Tone
Universal Rubrics. All research shows that single-target rubrics are most effective for student learning. This one includes 1-4 scoring, an explanation of objective writing, an example, a list of objective phrases, and a built-in and adaptable assignment that calls for critical thinking. This can also be purchased as part of a single-rubric 5-pack that assesses writing targets consistent with the expectations of Smarter Balanced, SAT, PARCC, MCAP, and others; hence, it is universal.
