My students examine these lyrics as Joyce Carol Oates dedicates her short story "Where Are You Going? Where Have You Been?" to Bob Dylan. My students read the story and then watch the film adaptation called Smooth Talk. Tiered reader questions focus on thematic development, word choice denotation and connotation, author's purpose, and making inferences. This has two options: 1) Write an essay about a song that best represents your life or one aspect of your life or your personality—who you are as a student, artist, athlete, person, etc. 2) Write an essay about a song that you find particularly thought-provoking that has nothing to do with any personal event in your life.
