Most people know this song of course as “He’s got the whole world.” By changing the pronoun students immediately understand that there are things that they can influence and change in the world. A wonderful exercise to use as a tool for classroom culture and community building. Solicit ideas from the students of the ways that we/they can help create a compassionate classroom.

This song is based on a poem of the same name, written by William Edward Hickson, 1803-1870. Apparently at one time students were required to memorize this poem in order to graduate from school. You can read the original poem here: https://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Try,_Try_Again.I changed it a little to make it fit into the music, and added a chorus. I think it is one of the most important things to learn. A great discussion starter for students regarding resilience and handling set-backs.
