Preview of Disk and Washer Radius Practice

Disk and Washer Radius Practice

Created by
Emily P K
For most students, the hardest part about finding the volume of a solid of revolution is identifying whether to use disks or washers* and what the radius/radii are. This set of 24 problems lets students focus on those two important aspects, with four sets of six related problems. Students are not asked to complete the (sometimes tedious) calculations to find the volume; instead, they are asked only to focus on identifying whether to use disks or washers and giving expressions for r (and R, for

These notes correspond with my First and Second Derivative Tests and Concavity PowerPoint. Students may follow along as you go through the power point and make their own notes. This hopefully saves time and allows students to focus more on the concept rather than trying to get everything written down.

AP Calculus Free Response Packet

This packet contains 18 multi-part questions modeled after past AP Calculus free response questions. This document can be used as an AP exam review packet or split up and used throughout the course (which is what I intended in writing the problems). The packet covers most all of the content in AP Calculus AB. I also sell these same problems divided up into four units (differentiation, applications of differentiation, integration, differential equations and applications of integration).

This three-part worksheet contains practice for all types of integration methods in AP Calculus BC. The three parts are as follows: - Practice with mental u-substitution: When the derivative of u is a constant - True/false: Identifying and correcting common mistakes - Multiple methods: Do the same problem using two different methods. The methods of integration necessary are as follows: - Basic integration methods (power rule, etc.) - u-substitution - Integration by parts - Integration using p

Calculus: The Coyotes Instantaneous Velocity on Impact with Key (Editable)

Before delving into calculus directly, I like to give my precalculus/IB students something to which they can relate: the concept of instantaneous velocity, as it applies to the infamous cartoon coyote. This activity "holds their hands" through the process of calculating the coyote's instantaneous velocity from an informal limits perspective. I use it within cooperative groups, and I circulate to make sure they are getting the purpose of the questions. The file includes spiral review problems.

Intro. to Calc. #1 (Average Rate of Change)

In trying to bridge the gap between our textbooks and the AP Calculus expectations, I felt that another unit needed to be created. For this reason, I developed this "Intro. to Calc." unit that takes place directly after a short "prerequisites" unit and right before introducing actual differentiation rules. I felt as if concepts like tangent/secant lines went hand-in-hand with concepts like the Mean Value Theorem and could be introduced conceptually without getting bogged down in the mechanics

BUILD A TURKEY w/ DERIVATIVES - Thanksgiving Power Rule Review Activity

Students take the 1st through 6th derivative of a polynomial function (7 options). They write each derivative on a feather of the turkey. Fun review of the power rule with an emphasis on using proper notation of a derivative. Perfect review activity before break!

Introduction to Concavity

Created by

This activity presents students with a piece-wise defined function that models a portion of the roller coaster "The Racer". Students are then introduced to the concepts of concavity and points of inflection. The activity walks them through graphing a sketch of the derivative function and then asks them to make connections between concavity and points of inflection and the graph of the first derivative. The intent is to get them to see for themselves the need for the second derivative.

Limits of Functions Using Critical Points and Dicontinuities

Given a graph, students will find limits of functions using the three types of discontinuities: removable, jump, and infinite. The table provided allows students to find limits using left and right behavior, and determining if it exists from both sides. Also, students will find the functional values at these critical points.

Differentiation Rules - Numerically and Graphically

In this multi-part file, students apply what they know about basic derivative rules (sum/difference, constant multiple, product, quotient, and chain) numerically and graphically. Part 1 (half-sheet, front-to-back): Students write an expression for the derivative of certain functions and state what rule they applied. For example: the derivative of f(2x) is 2f'(2x), which is an application of the chain rule. Part 2 (one page): Students use a table of values for f f' g and g' to find the derivat

Discovery of Tangent and Cotangent Graph

This is a discovery worksheet for students to build their knowledge of the values of sine and cosine to discover the properties of the tanx and cotx graph. This will help them understand why the vertical asymptotes occur and why and how cotx and tanx differ. They do the sine value / cosine value to determine the tangent value. They can either do the decimal approximation or practice dividing the fractions.
