Teaching mathematics should be done in a manner in which students are the center of learning and doing much of the talking, explaining and writing. The teacher’s role is to guide students in their learning. By using technology as a tool for discovery and by incorporating open-ended questions into a lesson, teachers can achieve a student-centered classroom. Students should be given the opportunity to discover mathematics for themselves and relate the subject matter to everyday life. When students are able to make the connection between the mathematics that they are learning and how it is used in their lives, they will have a better understanding of math as a whole. If students can relate to the mathematics that they are learning, they will then be able to communicate mathematically with their teachers and peers. Lastly, assessment should have multiple forms. Students think differently and should have an opportunity to express or demonstrate their skills and conceptual understanding in different ways such as tests, journals, projects and in-class interaction.
