This series of 46 questions asks students to analyze the rhetorical strategies, themes, and literary techniques used by Margaret Atwood in The Handmaid's Tale. Questions also include prompts regarding characterization, imagery, themes, mood, and symbolism.

My students spend a week discussing and writing business letters. In the first assignment, they are asked to write a letter to a company, complaining about a product or service. When students finish, they switch letters with a partner and have to answer their partner's letter, as if they work at that company. Great for an English or a business class.

Op-Ed Analysis Project (AP Lang./Comp.)
In this project, students select a prominent, current op-ed columnist whose views on contemporary issues they find engaging. Students then color-code and annotate 3 of their chosen writer's columns, analyzing the writer's rhetorical choices. Finally, students synthesize information from their annotated columns to craft a letter addressed to a public official or other stakeholder in a position of power to urge a particular course of action or policy change.

Commas Worksheet: Clauses and Equal Adjectives

This assessment worksheet on commas focuses on clauses and equal adjectives. The sentences are silly, and kids really enjoy the light humor. While kids were silently taking the assessment, I would hear snickers and giggles; along with the occasional, "Mr. Johnson, you write weird stuff".
Although the worksheet is fun, the content is serious stuff. You'll be able to quickly assess all students level of sophistication with these kinds of commas.
