Learning Activities for the Pre-AP* Algebra II and Pre-calculus Classrooms

Created by
Mark Sparks
This book contains interactive learning activities that can be used as exploratory lessons and class discussions to develop topics in Algebra II and Pre-calculus. Topics include a variety of different topics that are typically found in each of these two courses. They are designed to foster analytically thinking that all students need, but that students of Pre-AP* and AP* classes need in order to be successful in AP Calculus and/or AP Statistics. A complete list of topics can be seen by downlo

Long Division of Polynomials Cheat Sheet This is a quick one page cheat sheet that ends all confusion when dividing polynomials. Two side by side examples of long division clarifies the mystery! Another example is provided with thought bubbles. I have found that this is the BEST way to illustrate polynomial long division. This 14 question circuit that I wrote for my Algebra 2 students has problems with log equations, exponential equations, log properties and evaluating logs. It is meant to be completed without a calculator as long as students know some powers of integers from 2-10. There is some work with rational exponents and solving linear equations with fractions also.

This changes everything! Student work becomes more consistent. Your grading will be so much easier! Using the four aligned graphs makes translations of trig functions crystal clear. This file has 2 pages of coordinate planes for graphing trig functions. The first page contains four blank graphs per page. The axes are unlabeled so that students may select their own scale. The second page has five blank graphs per page and is set up for conducting transformations on the coordinate plane. Please see

Transformations of Parent Functions Guide

This is a word document that I use as a hand-out for my pre-calculus students learning about parent functions and their off-spring (I like to call them the "momma" functions as well). Through examples of absolute value, quadratic, cubic, radical, and rational functions, I offer a visual and explanations of transformations. Vertical and horizontal stretches and shifts are the transformations. I left a couple of boxes blank for the students to offer their sketches of the transformed function.

Students work to complete 12 long division of polynomials problems. They hunt in the circuit for the answer to the current problem. When they find it, that is the next problem they complete. So, the worksheet is somewhat self-checking. If students can't find their answers, then they know they need to find their errors. There are problems with no remainders and some with remainders. There are also polynomials with a constant "a" that the students need to determine which gives a specified re

These notes correspond with my First and Second Derivative Tests and Concavity PowerPoint. Students may follow along as you go through the power point and make their own notes. This hopefully saves time and allows students to focus more on the concept rather than trying to get everything written down.

This packet contains over 380 bell ringer problems (AKA do nows or warm ups) for an entire Trigonometry course. Problems are broken up into sets of six (there are a few that are sets of three, but only a few) that can be done on a daily basis. Also contained in the document is a copy of the Bell Work Sheet on page three. Students receive a Bell Work Sheet at the beginning of the week and do their work each day until they submit their sheet on Friday for the teacher to assess. Each day, the tea

This is an activity where students work in pairs, read & follow instructions, to create an parabola on paper or waxed paper. Working together, they discover the parts of the parabola. There are also questions to answer so that each pair can discover properties of the parabola. There are similar lessons available for the hyperbola, and ellipse. Creating A Hyperbola Creating An Ellipse I use this lesson as the students first introduction to each conic, then give a lesson the next day. Thi

I created this as a quick warm-up activity for the first day of my high school math classes. I needed them to think about the wording of the standards and mathematical language in general. I wanted them to connect the Standards for Mathematical Practice to things they would understand in real life. They enjoyed the activity and it allowed them to have something to do while we worked through the "first-day bumps" after Summer vacation.
