First and Second Derivative Tests and Concavity Notes

Created by
Michele Cubed
These notes correspond with my First and Second Derivative Tests and Concavity PowerPoint. Students may follow along as you go through the power point and make their own notes. This hopefully saves time and allows students to focus more on the concept rather than trying to get everything written down.

This product is intended to be given alongside the AP Calculus AB and BC Summer Homework on my page. In this document, there are several problems similar to the problems found in the summer homework, with all theorems, explanations, and answers provided. I use this as a tool to allow students to seek help over the summer without directly needing to contact me. My students have found this resource to be helpful to them as needed. The following topics are covered in this worksheet:Slope, Point-Slo

This is a series of 5 mini-projects focusing on optimization (or analyzing other features of functions) using differential calculus. I call them "mini-projects" because each of them can be completed over the course of 2-3 hour-long class periods, depending on students' mathematical backgrounds. They can be done individually, but probably work better as small group projects. Each project handout gives all the relevant background information, and then frames a series of questions. They are desig

In trying to bridge the gap between our textbooks and the AP Calculus expectations, I felt that another unit needed to be created. For this reason, I developed this "Intro. to Calc." unit that takes place directly after a short "prerequisites" unit and right before introducing actual differentiation rules. I felt as if concepts like tangent/secant lines went hand-in-hand with concepts like the Mean Value Theorem and could be introduced conceptually without getting bogged down in the mechanics

This product is intended to provide a review of derivative rules students have seen throughout calculus. Although this list is not exhaustive, it includes numerous rules that must be mastered, including trigonometric derivatives and several special derivative rules. Ideal for some unique quick practice or just brushing up on skills that were previously mastered.

This lesson/activity was designed to have students explore the transformations of logarithms using online graphing software through Desmos.com. This can be used as an independent investigation (if students have access to computers/personal devices) or as a guided lesson. It serves as a great reference tool for the logarithms unit.

Limits of Functions Using Critical Points and Dicontinuities

Created by
Adam Wade
Given a graph, students will find limits of functions using the three types of discontinuities: removable, jump, and infinite. The table provided allows students to find limits using left and right behavior, and determining if it exists from both sides. Also, students will find the functional values at these critical points.

Reference Sheet - Derivatives and Integrals

A simplified version of those lengthy derivative and integral tables in textbooks. Students can keep this reference sheet in their notebook and fill it in a bit at a time throughout the course. Page 1 has a list of major derivatives and derivative rules, and page 2 has a list of important integrals. On the integrals page, dashed lines indicate integral rules that directly follow from derivative rules (e.g., the derivative of sin(x) is cos(x), so the antiderivative of cos(x) is sin(x). ) to em

This activity will allow students to explore different scenarios and seeing what kind of information that the derivative (using only the power rule) can tell us, including what a derivative of 0 means in each of these contexts. Calculators are needed to evaluate some of the derivatives at a certain value, but no other differentiation methods are needed besides the Power Rule.

On the front, students look at three sets of graphs and label each one f, f' and f''. They are to explain in sentences their selection. On the back is a multiple choice question in which students are given a graph of f' and asked to choose which could be f. Again, they are asked to explain their selection in sentences.
