Polynomial Function Project - Roller Coaster

Created by
Algomath
In this project, students learn how to use polynomial function to model roller coaster rides. In this first part, they are given some polynomial functions to find the relative maximum/minimum, increasing/decreasing intervals, x- and y-intercepts, etc. They will explore the average rate of change. In the second part of the project, students are asked design their own roller coaster given some basic criteria. Students should use graphing devices/computer applications to complete this project.

This item is a functions review activity to be used at the end of a functions unit in Algebra 2. Students look at graphs and try to match the different characteristics to each graph. Some graphs may look different but may have some of the same characteristics, which makes this activity challenging. The characteristics included are: domain, range, x and y intercepts, increasing and decreasing intervals, end behavior, and horizontal and vertical asymptotes. I like to get my students out of the

These notes correspond with my First and Second Derivative Tests and Concavity PowerPoint. Students may follow along as you go through the power point and make their own notes. This hopefully saves time and allows students to focus more on the concept rather than trying to get everything written down.

This worksheet is 9 questions, but each question has multiple parts for students to graph a rational functions. Students are asked to identify the y intercepts, x intercepts, vertical asymptotes, horizontal asymptomes, and plot a few points. The worksheet is organized for students to display this information. Some examples require students to factor/use the quadratic formula to find the x-intercepts. This worksheet aligns to algebra 2 standards of secondary math 2 common core standards, or a P

Vertical Horizontal Slant Asymptotes of Rational Functions

This is a guided note sheet that covers the topic of vertical, horizontal and slant asymptotes. Although this is not a "fun" activity, I think at the PreCalculus level it is necessary to discuss mathematical topics that are thought provoking without clouding the concept. The flow of the lesson has students discuss with the teacher the hows and whys of each asymptote and is followed by how to graph rational functions without the aid of a graphing calculator. The lesson also includes how to det
