This fun project on consumer topics originally created to be used as a "holiday shopping project". It has now been made generic for any time of the year, but is easily customizable. It is a great way to assess a unit over percent proportions.
Students use the percent proportion to calculate discounts, taxes, tips, percent off, and original prices. Students create a final product which can be displayed. A rubric is included. Tax rates in the Katy, TX area are utilized but can be customized

Prime Factorization (or Factor Tree)
This activity / assessment has 16 questions where the student fills in the factor tree. It is a great way to start the kids thinking about factoring polynomials. it will also tell you who knows their multiplication tables.
The students who could do these were able to factor more easily and were more likely to be able to apply it to factoring polynomials like

Checking Account Mini Lesson and Activity
This is a one day activity. Students learn about deposits and withdrawls and the consequences of cashing a bad check. They are required to keep a check book accurately and there are pretend checks for the students to practice with. Checkbook Activity - Adding and Subtracting Integers (7.NS.1)
This is an activity that gives student practice with and adding and subtracting positive and negative integers. This is Bingo game is a great way to review or practice the important skill of simplifying expressions. To start the game, have each student create their own game board using a pen or marker (if they use a pencil, they may try and move their answers to get a bingo quicker).
