Description

This fun project on consumer topics originally created to be used as a "holiday shopping project". It has now been made generic for any time of the year, but is easily customizable. It is a great way to assess a unit over percent proportions.

Students use the percent proportion to calculate discounts, taxes, tips, percent off, and original prices. Students create a final product which can be displayed. A rubric is included. Tax rates in the Katy, TX area are utilized but can be customized to your area. This project inspires many conversations about finding original price, discounts, rebates, taxes and tips, state and local taxes, etc. Done entirely in class, this project covered three to four 45-minute class periods for a Pre-AP 7th grade math class. Allow more time for academic classes.
