Included in the flipchart is a graphic organizer for brainstorming, common core standard/big idea/essential question, forms to write on, a link to "Squirrel's New Year's Resolution," hall display signs, and photos of the finished product. Every year during the winter my students and I love to make paper quilts. There is so much American history in the topic of quilting. This activity is fun for students of any age as they create quilt blocks from a template. This ActivBoard activity is linked to literature, math and social studies. Common Core Standards for 3rd grade are included along with step by step instructions and examples. Finally there in an interactive page where students can create their own quilt block.

Teachers fill up ziplock bags of Lucky Charm cereal and distribute bags to small groups of students. Students count the total number of oats and different types of marshmallows. After adding up all of the totals, they find the rang, mean, median, and mode of their data set. They then collect the other groups data and analyze the whole class totals.

In lieu of a "star student", this works better for upper grades. Each week choose a Newsmaker of the Week. The newsmaker does a little "show-n-tell" style presentation about themselves and then each student writes an article about them on a sheet of 5 in. by 11 in. binder paper (like a column.) Then create a headline in Word saying like: JOE SMITH: NEWSMAKER OF THE WEEK, glue it onto actual newspaper and then glue on all the students articles on as well. It creates a personal newspaper. A
