Ostinato and Dave Brubeck's "Unsquare Dance"
Students will move and perform to the classic Jazz tune by Dave Brubeck. They learn the ostinato and clap and march to the ostinato in a fun circle dance and can also play along with the bass line. Essential and ELA questions are provided to connect to literacy.
A follow-up lesson has the students composing their own ostinati and performing for their peers. A Common Core classic!

Compose a song! Back to School theme
This interactive whiteboard activity is great for very young students in music class who are learning about steady beat, rhythm, or composition. Students will work together to compose an original song/chant through an easy drag'n'drop game. Students simply take turns dragging school supply pictures into the boxes, then say or play the rhythm of the items. Ostinato and O Fortuna
Students will love learning about ostinati through the vibrant O Fortuna by Carl Orff. Students perform along with the ostinato using body percussio, as well as pitched percussion. A follow-up composition activity follows in this easy to use and engaging lesson that has a proven track record! (Please note that the score is in 6/4. The Little Fugue of Johann Sebastian Bach
Students learn the Art of the Fugue in this colorful and fun lesson that incorporates Dalcrose, instrumental performance, and active listening. The "Little Fugue" in G-Minor is explored with two listening maps and performance activities that coincide with the entrances of the subject. Other fugue suggestions are added on the last page for additional listening. A biography of J.S. Bach's life and work is also included.
