Do we benefit from slavery today, as the North did in the 1800s?

This is a powerful lesson for students to see a modern connection to the past. Before this lesson, you should discuss with students how the North was complicit in slavery as much as the South was in the years prior to the Civil War. Northerners profited greatly off the backs of slave labor, whether they would have wanted to admit it or not. This lesson poses the question: Do we profit from slavery today? It uses multi-media clips about Nike and Apple as well as a song called "Are My Hands Clean"

I used the song C.R.E.A.M (Cash rules everything around me) by Wu Tang and made it Castles Rise Everywhere Around Me. This song is all about the different social groups that took part in feudalism and the Manorial System. Here is a preview down below. Serfs grew food on land that was arable Being a peasant probably was terrible Nobles and peasants are not comparable Clothes were scarce so undies aren’t wearable These ages were dark and the plague was black But nothing was as scary as a Viking

Income Inequality: popular music and social justice

Music and social justice have always had close ties. Music has been used for centuries to pass on important life lessons and to motivate change.  Many artists have recorded songs that seek to empower the listener to make social change. In addition, pop culture can help youth to discuss important social issues with peers; talking about social issues with peers can be daunting, particularly if the youth lives and goes to school in an atmosphere in which they know that their viewpoint is not necess

This song taps on the 7 principles of mercantilism (it does not directly mention ALL 7 principles). Here is a sample below. I wrote the song to flow with the song All About the Benjamin's. Here is a sample: 1500’s come with goods getting sold. A nation’s wealth based on silver and gold You can have copper and iron in your fist But that don’t mean nothing to a merc-ant-ilist Mercantilists all about getting paid The best way to do this is balance of trade

This track off of "HipHoponomics Vol. 2: The Man, the Myth, Adam Smith" unpacks Smith’s key concept of the Division of Labor. In Book I, Ch. Find Economics resources | TPT

If you’re an educator or parent looking for printable or digital resources to help your student learn about economics, TPT has got you covered. We’ve got a comprehensive collection of economics and financial literacy resources available, including activities and lessons on trade, goods and services, and the stock market to name just a few. With plenty of TPT high-quality resources at your fingertips, you’ll be able to teach economics to your students in no time at all.

Economics activities to try

Here are a few examples of the different types of activities and lessons you can find on TPT to help teach students about economics:

Simulation Activities

You can introduce students to the world of investing, budgeting, and other economics-related activities through simulations. For example, have students research companies they want to "invest" in to show them how the stock market works. If you want to extend the lesson, you can have them periodically check in on their portfolios throughout the year to see how their investments are performing. Or, you could use a simulation to teach them about causes that led up to certain major historical events, like the stock market crash of 1929.

Budgeting Exercises

Help students understand the importance of managing their own financial resources by challenging them to create a budget. Give them a few hypothetical scenarios involving income, expenses, and financial goals. For example, you could ask them to plan a fictional character's monthly expenses, or have them create a budget to save for buying a house.

Trade Games

Through trading games, students can learn about importing and exporting, along with the impact of external forces and trade agreements. Ask students to work in teams and have them trade goods, record their imports and exports, and respond to charges (like tariffs and embargoes).

Cost-Benefit Analysis

Give students a real-world decision to make (e.g., building a new road, investing in a new technology, or buying property) and have them perform a cost-benefit analysis. To deepen the learning, you can ask them to justify their decisions with evidence.

Frequently asked questions for teaching economics
