Preview of Virtual Human Brain Dissection

Virtual Human Brain Dissection

This is a virtual dissection alternative that allows students to dissect a 3D human brain, record observations, answer analysis questions on the observations and label a sheep's brain with the synonymous human brain structures. The analysis questions are mixed formats between direct questions and critical thinking concluding questions. This activity can be completed completely online or printed out for in-person instruction. It is meant to serve as an alternative method to performing a dissectio
Preview of Action Potential Neuron Activity

Action Potential Neuron Activity

Using the free PhET simulation, this activity helps guide students through the process of an action potential by focusing on the membrane of a neuron. This lab would be most appropriate for an high school Biology or Anatomy and Physiology course. The directions are geared towards students completing the assignment independently, however this could also be projected on a board and completed as a class too! The document is an editable word doc.

Action Potential Modeling Activity 2024

Understanding the events along a membrane that lead to an action potential can be very confusing for students. I use this interactive hands-on activity as an introduction to what happens. It allows me to be more of a facilitator and help groups work through the concepts, like concentration gradients and the movement of charges. Key to the activity is also provided.

The Reward Path, Pathology of Addiction, Mouse Party Worksheet with KEY

Created by

This is a 4-page Word document - the first 2 pages are the assignment, the next two pages are the KEY. I created this assignment to go along with a website and a YouTube video - all awesome, interesting stuff! The first part of the assignment, "The Reward Path", uses an interactive website at the University of Utah Genetics Learning Center. Students move through interactive and answers questions about the how your brain behaves when it needs something - like food, and eating a cheeseburger.

Virtual Spirometer Lab (Respiratory System)

Are you looking for a lab to do in your Respiratory System Unit? Often, there are minimum labs that are adapted and ready to teach students about how their lungs work and the tools we use to measure capacity. This lab is a completely virtual simulator that uses a spirometer and an automatic graphing system to create data. Students can set their own parameters to analyze and watch the data! There's even an option to save your data and export it to a new document for a lab report. The program is i

Digestive System Station Lab

Created by

This is a digestion system lab I created consisting of seven different stations. Students travel in pairs of small groups (I would suggest no larger than 4) to each of the labs where they are able to examine different components of the digestive system, including: - How amylase (and enzymes in general) work - How substrates and enzymes are specific on one another - How the muscles of the stomach work to breakdown food - What chemicals are found in the food that assist in digestion - How pH

Enzyme Station Lab

This is one of my favorite enzyme labs, because it allows students to explore different concepts of enzymes and really helps them understand it! This lab takes a little bit of planning, but trust me – it is worth it! I have supplied a materials list (by station). I usually allocate 2 days for this lab and have students complete in groups of 4. The supplies used (milk especially) will depend on how many students you have. My “material units” are designed for 65 students. I have this lab in a w

The science of addiction: Drugs and the Brain

This worksheet uses the Learn Genetics Utah site. Students complete three different interactives to learn about drugs and addiction. The interactives are fun and very student friendly.

T. rex Autopsy Worksheet for National Geographic Video

T. Rex Autopsy is a 2015 documentary airing on the National Geographic channel where a team of four paleontologists dissect a silicon replica of Tyrannosaurus. The four paleontologists were Tori Herridge, Stephen Brusatte, Matthew T. Mossbrucker and Luke Gamble, who is the lead anatomist. The T. rex was based on the most complete fossil, "Sue."This once-in-a-lifetime experiment offers an unprecedented opportunity to explore questions such as whether or not T. rex had feathers; how it fed with

VIRTUAL Online Brain Games Activity Sheet

This activity sheet uses various public websites to activate different parts of our brains. There are 5 websites that test reaction speed, short-term memory, long-term memory, facial recognition, puzzle solving. Each activity allows the students to play the game and then record their results. There are 2-3 follow-up analysis questions at the conclusion of each activity for students to reflect on their experiences with the game and how it relates to the active part of their brain. Before completi

Parts of a Neuron: Neural Communication and Reuptake Game

This game gets kids out of their seats and helps them see neural communication in action! Two colors of ping pong balls are recommended, but other items could be substituted. Topics explored include reuptake, receptors, neurotransmitters, dendrites, axon terminal and the synaptic gap.

BMI Eating and Exercise Internet Simulation/WebQuest

Use this simulation webquest with your Anatomy, PE/Health, Biology, or Life Skills class to help students to understand the connection between caloric intake, exercise, and BMI. Students will also get an opportunity to investigate the impact of their own lifestyle and their body composition. This can also be used as a laboratory activity for a science class.

Protein Folding - From amino acid to a Quaternary Protein.

I have been trying to find an activity to model dehydration synthesis all the way up to folding a protein. This activity begins identifying the parts of an amino acid, then models dehydration synthesis of a dipeptide. Students cut out their amino acids and form a polypeptide chain. The activity then takes them from the primary structure of a protein all the way to the Quaternary structure. Tools needed: scissors and tape.

Biology - The Epidemic - A Contact Tracing Activity

This is a fun-filled, hands-on activity appropriate for students in grades 7 through 12. Students will "exchange fluids" and then contract trace this simulated viral infection to determine where the infection originated. Required lab materials and instructions included.

Bread Digestion Lab

Created by

This lab allows students to get a hands on, visual experience of the digestive system in action. Students will read a detailed summary about the process of the digestive system. Then, they will follow explicit procedures which will have them "digest" a piece of bread through each part of the digestive process. After each part there is a quick question to make sure students are identifying the type of digestion they are simulating. This package includes:Digestive System SummaryProcedures for Brea

Personalized Chromosome

Practice the concepts of genes, chromosomes, and traits by building a wearable (and fashionable!) model. Students use beads to represent genes of various visible dominant or recessive traits, building a faux chromosome.Recommended supplies: pipe cleaners, yarn/string, many different colored beads (trays of 18 or more colors are best)Since this is a Word document, the traits and bead colors can be edited as you wish.

This is a one-page word document with colorful pictures and a youtube-embedded video. I use these notes as an introduction to human musculature and spread the notes out over the course of 2-3 class periods to avoid boredom. I only let the students spend about 10-15 minutes taking notes, then I go over the notes with them answering any questions or explaining the pictures as we go along. Then I give them something else to do such as viewing a PPT or completing an assignment. This is a wealth
