Social Skills Unit based on My Mouth is a Volcano by Julia Cook

Created by
Erin Butzer
This mini-unit is designed to teach and review with students the importance of being polite, respectful friends by not interrupting. Taking turns is an important life skill that students need to practice and learn. The unit can be used to teach and/or review with students in pre-K through 5 grade at any level, including a great resource for special education. The book "My Mouth is a Volcano" by Julia Cook is a great addition to this unit, but is not required for this unit to be successful.

Tuesday by David Wiesner Socratic Seminar Plan + Extras

Socratic Seminar is an amazing way to assess student understanding and find holes in it, too. In addition, students who have difficulty with writing, but are able to verbalize their thinking will find an even playing field. This seminar on David Wiesner's book, Tuesday, is meant for younger students. I have used it as earl

Every year I give my students classroom jobs. This year I wanted to find a way to make this routine more relevant to my students by giving them a taste of real-life job hunting. Instead of assigning the students jobs, they will brainstorm skills and positive personality traits that could make them a good candidate for a particular job. Then, they will participate in an interview process before being "hired" for one of positions of their choosing. This product download contains: Classroom

Morning News Reporter Form

This language arts form is a great way to start the day! It's also a good way to give kids a chance to orally report something to their classmates. This brief form allows the student to fill out information for the "radio station"--which is your room number. The information includes date, temperature, and big news of the day. The students can either use a thermometer you have in the room that shows outside temperature, or they can check using the computer. I find even the children who are so shy
