Over the course of the year studying American history, many critical events stand out. This highly engaging, CCSS rich, research, debate, and evaluation activity challenges students to make their case for THE most imporant event. At the end of the fiercely contested debate, a winner will be crowned. Kids absolutely love this and will be talking about it for months, perhaps years.

This handout outlines a Common Core aligned Controversial Issue Project. Students will choose a worthwhile issue, create a rationale, develop a narrative, lead a lesson/debate on the topic as well as complete a research paper and reflection. This unit outline was designed as a 4-6 week project for a Writing Workshop class.
