Three FUNCTION SYSTEMS Mini Projects - Real World!
8th Grade Functions and Systems of Equations come together in an engaging, real-world project (3 mini projects)!
The projects require the students to create displays that include graphs, tables, domain, range, mapping, and reflection. The students write two functions in each mini project based on a possible real-world scenario. The students must not only visually display their functions in various forms, but they must explain the results and effects of small changes in the data or function.

Linear Equations Project - Graphing the Eiffel Tower
Discover linear equations the fun way. This is a 5 day project that is ready to use. Implementing it in your class will be as easy as pi.
Students will need access to a computer or iPad. They will use a powerful online graphing calculator to create a drawing of the Eiffel tower via www.desmos.com.

SIMPLE INTEREST: What Are My Monthly Payments? End of Year FUN!
Interest = (Principal)(Rate)(Time)
This is a simple formula for simple interest! The common core standards puts this skill in 7th grade (7.RP.A.3), but students that have a handle on basic percent and substituting for variables can do this and have FUN! I use it in 8th grade for a great end of year project that the kids love to do, it fills at least three days, and makes a great bulletin board. The lesson can easily be simplified for younger students or beefed up for high schoolers.

College Tuition Project
A project I developed to explore functions and introduce the idea of exponential functions within my 8th grade math classes. It starts with a college exploration - looking for fun facts and trivia about the university of their choice. It then delves into cost of tuition during the years 2000 and 2020. Compare Linear, Quadratic, Exponential Task
Students choose between five scenarios (saving money, call of duty, race to mars, zombies, social media) with 3 different situations (linear/exponential/quadratic).
