Properties of Water Inquiry Lab: Find the Antidote to a Wasp Sting - NGSS

Created by
Next Gen Sci Guy
Aligned with the Next Generation Science Standards, this lab requires students to discover the antidote to a venomous hornet sting. Students must work cooperatively under a time constraint in order to discover which of two liquids are the antidote. They design, and carry out, four mini-experiments using household materials, and their knowledge of the properties of water, in order to ascertain the antidote. They must justify their claim for which liquid is the antidote using evidence from thei

This is the lab that I use to introduce the light microscope. The first part of the lab focuses on the proper procedures of using a microscope. Each student has to fill out the procedures section before they can start working on the field of view drawings. Once they are done then each pair of students gets a letter 'e' slide and a colored threads slide. This activity supports Grade Seven California State Science Standard 7A - Select and use appropriate tools and technology (including calculators

In Brief: The lab proceeds as follows1. Students complete a short matching section using important genetics terms2. Students read about five different human traits (Interlacing of fingers, PTC tasting, Presence of Palmaris Longus Muscle, Hair Texture, and Color Vision)3. Students attempt to determine their genotpyes, based upon their phenotypes, and the information in the lab.4. Students perform Punnett Squares using their genotypes, in order to make predictions about future generationsA. NEXT

Trees, Forestry and Deforestation 5E Lab-Distance learning possible

Update for distance learning: Students could do this lab at home with a tree in their backyard, neighborhood, or park. They need a cheap measuring tape, a cardboard triangle, string and a weight. Through zoom or a video, teachers can help students through the math. Another option is for the teacher to make a video measuring a tree and the corresponding math. Students can do the follow-up questions on their own. This is a full 5E designed for inquiry. It is advanced enough for AP, but accessible f

Virtual Human Brain Dissection

This is a virtual dissection alternative that allows students to dissect a 3D human brain, record observations, answer analysis questions on the observations and label a sheep's brain with the synonymous human brain structures. The analysis questions are mixed formats between direct questions and critical thinking concluding questions. This activity can be completed completely online or printed out for in-person instruction. It is meant to serve as an alternative method to performing a dissectio

This is a comprehensive dissection guide of the pig heart, designed for a high school or early college Biology or Anatomy & Physiology class. Pig hearts are larger than the typically used sheep hearts, and better resemble the human heart structure. The guide includes step-by-step instructions and labeled diagrams that will lead students through the external anatomy of the heart, followed by dissection of the internal structures. In addition to description of structures, the relevant physio

This is my favorite microscope lab because the students really get to see organisms swimming around in the water. I ask the students to bring in water samples from water sources around their neighborhood. Make sure to tell them that you don't want a water sample from the gutter. I have a digital microscope that I use to project the images on my overhead screen. There is nothing better than seeing a 3 foot long mosquito larva projected on the overhead screen!!! The goal of this lab is to introduce students to Drosophila melanogaster in a fun approachable, virtual way! The lab helps students understand why scientists use Drosophila and how scientists actually use crosses to investigate new mutation alleles they discover in their labs. The crosses are relatively simple (no dihybrids, only one trait crosses). Students should work with the files in EDIT mode, not PRESENT mode. Parts 2-4 have some fun GIFs with moving flies!
