How to find the volume of a solid using the liquid displacement method
This is a short, animated, PowerPoint slide show, demonstrating the method used to find the volume of an irregular solid (a swimmer doll) using liquid displacement. The original volume of water in the graduated cylinder is measured, the swimmer races over to the graduated cylinder and jumps into the water, the water level rises, and the new volume of the water is measured. Cooperative Learning Job Cards
These are great for organizing group work and cuts out the questions on who can do what. You can print these out on full pages and display them or do what I do and print multiple per page so I can just hand them out to students during group work. I had students work in groups of 2 for this activity. Within the activity I broke it up into three different sections; a pre-lab, lab, and post-lab portion. Students make initial guesses/hypothesis, test out their theory, use proportions and ratios to analyze their results and graph data.
