Skittles Probability
Students use skittles to discover or review the probability of simple, compound, independent, and dependent events. This is a fun way for students to experiment with matter (candy bars) and use science equipment.
After teaching a lesson on mass, volume and density, students can apply their knowledge and work in groups to measure different candy bars.

Free Clothespin Science- Practicing tables and graphs
This quick and easy activity/lab is a great introduction to collecting data and presenting it in simple tables and graphs. My 5th students love this and like that they can do it on their own at the beginning of the year. It can be done with younger students as well with some simple modeling. Directions are included on the lab sheet. You just need some clothespins and a stopwatch.

How to find the volume of a solid using the liquid displacement method
This is a short, animated, PowerPoint slide show, demonstrating the method used to find the volume of an irregular solid (a swimmer doll) using liquid displacement. The original volume of water in the graduated cylinder is measured, the swimmer races over to the graduated cylinder and jumps into the water, the water level rises, and the new volume of the water is measured. Cooperative Learning Job Cards
These are great for organizing group work and cuts out the questions on who can do what. You can print these out on full pages and display them or do what I do and print multiple per page so I can just hand them out to students during group work. Skittles Proportion Activity
Students are to be provided a bag of skittles. They are going to use proportions and ratios to determine if there are the same number/ratio of each color in all different sized bags.
I had students work in groups of 2 for this activity. Within the activity I broke it up into three different sections; a pre-lab, lab, and post-lab portion. Students make initial guesses/hypothesis, test out their theory, use proportions and ratios to analyze their results and graph data.
