Maximizing Volume: Cubic Functions (popcorn lab)

Student will create boxes from graph paper. Their goal is to make a bog with the biggest volume possible. They will then determine an equation representing the volume of a box. They'll use a graphing calculator to determine the maximum volume and height of the box as well as the domain and range. at the end of the activity they will determine how many pieces of popcorn could fit in their box. the teacher will then give them popcorn to snack on. This activity is a HIT! especially with those

Calculus Lab 6-1: Newton’s Law of Cooling Hot Coffee Lab

All students love a field trip even if it is only to McDonald’s to measure the temperature of the coffee. We meet at 7:30 in the morning at McDonald’s, set up in the playroom (no children are playing that early), eat breakfast and use temperature probes to collect data on the cooling coffee. The students have already researched the McDonald’s 1992 hot coffee lawsuit so we are there to find out if anything has changed since that time. We return to school and finish the “field trip” in the comput

Matter and Properties

This graphic organizer allows students to test a variety of objects to determine their properties. Categories include size, shape, color, mass, texture, magnetism, buoyancy, conductivity, etc. The first chart suggest items and the second chart has room for students to fill in their own objects. Perfect for preparing for the NYS Science Test.

PHET Vector Lab (Online Simulator)

I created this lab as an intro into two dimensional motion for my physics classes. The lab uses all the techniques of adding vectors head-to-tail and demonstrates for them that the two vectors being added to make a resultant are the components of that resultant. This lab is great practice and very self-explanatory for grades 11 and 12. I created this lab so that it was an electronic lab so that they could open the lab on their computers, fill out the lab in MS Word, and submit it back to me onli

Derivative of the Sine Cosine Exponential and Natural Log functions (Editable)

To help my students see the connection between the sine, cosine, exponential, and natural log graph and their derivatives, I have them use the TI calculators to compute the derivatives. For the sine and cosine, they graph the derivatives directly on the graph; for the other functions, they use a table to verify their derivatives. I use it within cooperative groups, and I circulate to make sure they are getting the purpose of the questions. The file includes spiral review problems. This works

Cubic Project

This is a project designed around a specific property of any cubic polynomial. Students will write equations of tangent lines to a given cubic function and then determine areas of resulting bounded regions. By investigating these areas a perplexing property of cubic polynomials will be discovered. There are two parts to the project. In part one students work with a specific cubic and arrive and specific answers. In part two students solve the problem in general for any cubic. CAS methods are
