Engineering: Weights and Measures Conversion Tables
A weights and measures conversion table is useful when converting and calculating engineering, construction and STEM problem solving projects and activities. It helps students learn how to locate information and convert that information into their calculations. The conversion table also allows teachers to increase the rigor in their activities and problem solving projects by supplying students access to the needed information to accurately calculate a complex problem.

Skittles Proportion Activity
Students are to be provided a bag of skittles. They are going to use proportions and ratios to determine if there are the same number/ratio of each color in all different sized bags.
I had students work in groups of 2 for this activity. Within the activity I broke it up into three different sections; a pre-lab, lab, and post-lab portion. Students make initial guesses/hypothesis, test out their theory, use proportions and ratios to analyze their results and graph data.

Airplane Engineering Challenge
This is a great math lab that reinforces adding, subtracting, and multiplying decimals (5.NBT.7). Students are challenged to create a paper airplane designed to carry the most cargo (pennies) and travel the greatest distance.

The Scientific Method - A Picture is Worth 1000 Words Experiment
The purpose of this activity is to allow students to think critically to answer a seemingly simple question. In this case, it’s answer an old idiom that says a simple photograph can tell a story equivalent to over 1,000 words. The students will need to use the scientific method to determine a way to answer that question. They will also need to design a test to empirically show that one picture can generate a story/composition of over 1,000 words.
