Lori Stidham
This lesson is a fun way to help your students explore the mass, volume, and density of everyday objects. It teaches them all about measuring matter and then allows them to practice what they have learned through hands-on labs and word problem worksheets. It is primarily targeted for the 5-7 grade classroom. This lesson includes: 1. “Measuring Matter”PowerPoint with student handout 2. “Measuring Matter: Your Turn” (follows the ppt and lets students practice finding mass, volume, and density) 3

Halloween Science: Candy Corn Experiment!

Have your student explore which temperature of water will dissolve the candy corns first! They will be following the steps of the scientific method by predicting, observing, recording, drawing and concluding. This is a great activity to put in a center or even do as a demo or a whole class! Super EASY!

Unit Conversion (Unit Factor Method) Challenge Stations

I believe unit conversions / stoichiometry / dimensional analysis is one of the most important skills to master. It is so useful in real life, whether traveling internationally, cooking, building, sewing, etc. After the 50th worksheet and word problem, I decided to make activities and stations for my students to practice unit conversions. Each station is set up for a different “real life” scenario that could involve unit conversion. You can modify the scenarios to fit the materials you have, but

Engineering: Weights and Measures Conversion Tables

A weights and measures conversion table is useful when converting and calculating engineering, construction and STEM problem solving projects and activities. It helps students learn how to locate information and convert that information into their calculations. The conversion table also allows teachers to increase the rigor in their activities and problem solving projects by supplying students access to the needed information to accurately calculate a complex problem.

Skittles Proportion Activity

Students are to be provided a bag of skittles. They are going to use proportions and ratios to determine if there are the same number/ratio of each color in all different sized bags. I had students work in groups of 2 for this activity. Within the activity I broke it up into three different sections; a pre-lab, lab, and post-lab portion. Students make initial guesses/hypothesis, test out their theory, use proportions and ratios to analyze their results and graph data.

Measurement Lab I Weight Mass Length Capacity and Time

The measurement lab is a 24 question hands-on activity that includes all the components of measurement: using the tools, recognizing the terms, and converting measurements. It includes weight, mass, length, capacity, time, and temperature in both customary and metric units. The hands on measurement lab gives students all the confidence they need in order to master their measurement objectives! Instructions and extension questions are included. And be sure to check out my Measurement Google Forms

Newly revised and improved. What price should I charge for an order of french fries to maximize my profit? In this activity, the student will be given a total numbe of french fries orders sold at a given price. From this data the student will be asked to analyze this information and present their findings. This lesson will reinforce the theory of graphing data, defining variables, evaluating equations and inequalities using replacement sets, and formulating a conclusion. The use of spreadsh

The purpose of this activity is to allow students to think critically to answer a seemingly simple question. In this case, it’s answer an old idiom that says a simple photograph can tell a story equivalent to over 1,000 words. The students will need to use the scientific method to determine a way to answer that question. They will also need to design a test to empirically show that one picture can generate a story/composition of over 1,000 words. This is a FANTASTIC experiment to link science
