Teaching Charts

Teaching Charts was created by Rosemarie Young and Jane Reddig, former New York City District 2 public school teachers with a combined twenty plus years of experience childhood education and special education. Teaching Charts offers affordable instantly downloadable literacy resources created by teachers for teachers and parents of grades K-2 students. Units of study include daily reading and writing lessons, rubrics, assessments, suggested texts, exemplars, differentiated materials, and more! For parents, there is a resource section, which includes, activities, materials, tips and information to support literacy at home. Teaching Charts provides educators and parents with student friendly curriculum and tools to support learners at home aligned with the Common Core State Standards and TEKS to help all kids succeed.

The bulk of our teaching experience is in NYC’s highly recognized District 2 schools, which are known worldwide for their progressive curriculum and student centered philosophy of teaching and learning. Our own philosophy of teaching is simple: make learning fun and purposeful. Our ultimate goal, besides helping students meet standards, is to instill a love of learning. The best way to do that is create and implement lessons that are meaningful, purposeful and fun. We take abstract concepts and make it relatable to children and therefore easier to grasp. In our units of study, students will be detectives, treasure hunters, teachers, superheroes, marathoners, researchers and even actors! Nothing makes us happier than seeing our students come to the rug everyday, excited to find out what surprises we have in store. We also believe in the importance of teaching to the individual child. It is imperative for an educator to really know their students’ strengths, needs and learning styles because every learner is unique and may require differentiation, modifications, as well as special tools to help them grasp abstract concepts. The materials here, which we found much success with, were created to meet all of our students’ needs and we hope you will too.

Former elementary school teacher and native New Yorker, Rosemarie Young, has fourteen years of teaching under her belt in grades ranging from kindergarten through fourth grade. She has taught at New York City’s Alfred E. Smith School in Manhattan for eleven years and at a Charter school, Learning Community Charter School, in Jersey City, New Jersey for three years. Her professional accomplishments include co-presenting at a NCTE conference on Literacy and Language Acquisition called “Content Based Instruction: A Natural Approach to Second Language Acquisition” in 2001 and mentoring student teachers from numerous colleges and universities such as Hunter College, New York University, Pace University and Teacher’s College Columbia University. She has also been awarded grants from Target and Teachers Network, which were used to fund projects in her classroom. A big believer in learning through doing, Rosemarie has created many multidisciplinary units of study like “Flower Power” for Teachers Network.org. Rosemarie takes pleasure in watching her students from all backgrounds and levels flourish and light up with excitement for learning under her tutelage but wanted reach more students and teachers. Jane Reddig, a former Special Education teacher at the New York City Public Schools worked in Special Education settings for 7 years with Principal Recognition rewards. During this time, she became acutely aware of how difficult it is for teachers to develop effective lessons and activities for students who needed extra support. Moreover, the curriculum has to be aligned to the newly adopted Common Core State Standards or Texas Essential Knowledge Skills. Seeing many teachers facing this challenge, she decided to collaborate with her former co-teacher, Rosemarie Young to begin Teaching Charts, a literacy resource with differentiation for grades K-2 aligned to the Common Core State Standards and TEKS to support the teachers across the nation.

Jane Reddig received her MA Degree in Childhood Education and Special Education from New York University in 2006. Rosemarie Young also received her BA degree from New York University and MA degree in New York.
