Currently teaching fourth grade. Have taught preschool through university level. I began my career as a teacher of the deaf and moved into ASL as a foreign language for hearing students. I became a mental health counselor for the deaf, so I stopped teaching deaf kids and went to special education resource room. Just this year I moved to general education and still have plenty of opportunity to use my special education skills with the integration of all students and my need to differentiate instruction.
I believe in the rigor, relevancy and relationships model of instruction. I create a community within my classroom. We are not a family because your family is at home. We are a community of academic learners and super scholars. Students have jobs and get a paycheck for their work, this means they also have to pay rent on their desks and can earn bonuses or accrue fines for misbehavior. I believe in direct communication and offering students insight into how the world works and how to use their academic knowledge to be good citizens. I love learning from my students as well.
hmmm.... Best reward - Respect from other people
