I am an 20-year teaching veteran (gulp!) in the Social Studies classroom. Every year of my career, I have taught U.S. History in some form to 11th grade students: Standard, Advanced Placement/College-in-the-High School, and even sheltered/ELL. I absolutely love teaching, love my students, and love my subject area! I am constantly looking for new teaching methods and techniques, as well as always learning, learning, learning more history. I have taught in large comprehensive high schools of 2000+ students, and small rural high schools of approximately 400 students total. I consider myself to be an experienced, creative, and passionate history teacher!
My teaching style boils down to one word: ENGAGEMENT. Learning history is an ACTIVE process--students must be constantly "doing" in the history classroom. Lecture, note-taking, and reading difficult academic texts are absolutely an essential part of most history classrooms (including my own). BUT, we history teachers must also make room and time for learning activities that allow students to process, discuss, and discover information. We must go beyond the textbook to help students truly discover that history is an "argument"--not a set of dates, names, and facts.

I am married to an educator--an elementary school principal. We are the parents to two amazing daughters, ages 11 and 15. We have a crazy four-year old golden retriever--if you have any dog advice, please send it my way! I love to bake, garden, read, run, and spend as much time with my family and friends as possible.
