    Description

This bundle of Civil War Resources will support you and your students in active, engaged, interactive learning! Use these digital and paper activities to supplement your student textbook and to support blended learning in your classroom.

    How?

    • Begin your unit with the Civil War Clock Partners, using it to introduce Abraham Lincoln, Harriet Tubman, Frederick Douglass and John Brown. Repeat the activity throughout your unit to easily partner your students with another.
    • Introduce your students to the characteristics of the Antebellum Era North and South with the Antebellum Era North vs South Sorting Activity.
    • Help students capture what they learned in the Sorting Activity with the Civil War House Divided Foldable Notes. Additionally, familiarize students to the primary source of Lincoln's House Divided Speech.
    • Spend some time with the abolitionists and women's rights activists of the time with the Antebellum Era Reformers Jigsaw Activity. Challenge your students to learn about a reformer, read a primary source written by the reformer, teach their peers, and to discuss the question: "How did Antebellum Era reformers challenge established ideas about race and gender?" (NOTE: This is a PowerPoint/Google Slides™ activity)
    • Review the events that led up to the Civil War, from the Missouri Compromise to the Election of 1860, with The Civil War Word Puzzle.
    • Next, students collaborate with a partner to complete a small research project with The Civil War Poster Project. Students become the teacher as they research and present on a Civil War topic, either as a poster or a PowerPoint/Google Slides™ presentation. Use the Research Cornell Notes to support accurate and valid student research.
    • NEW! --> Ask students to analyze the successes and limitations of Reconstruction with the Reconstruction Content Choice Board. Students choose from 16 digital resources to read, watch, analyze and know as they take notes and answer the essential question.

    Included with each activity:

    • Detailed Teacher Directions with Tips and Procedures (PDF)
    • Student Directions, either in PDF or Slides (PowerPoint or Google Slides™)

    Teaching Strategies included:

    • Clock Partners, Sorting Activity, Foldable Notes, Small Group Jigsaw, and Research and Presentation (collaborative with a partner), Content Choice Board, Note-Taking

NOTE: These activities were designed for the high school history classroom but can be easily modified for middle school. Also, PDFs and Slides are not designed to be editable, except as needed for students to complete the activities.
