All children are individuals. They learn in unique ways and approach school differently. My approach to teaching is based on supporting children’s individuality and helping them grow into lifelong learners. An educator must have a good relationship with their students in order for the students to learn. There must be mutual trust and respect between student and teacher. Students need to understand what is expected of them and need to know what is coming next. Lessons must be challenging, and relevant to a student’s life and interests. By challenging a student with high expectations, educators can develop a student’s self-confidence and guide them to become successful learners. Lessons that are relevant to student’s life also build the student – teacher relationship. By overlapping art with other subjects, children are more successful. Students will retain information more easily and enjoyably if they make connections between their personal experiences and information presented in the classroom. Learning about other cultures can stimulate a child's individuality, creativity, and confidence. By developing cultural understanding, a student will often communicate better with others. If a student recognizes the importance of all viewpoints, they will realize the value of themselves and their own ideas. My lessons are based on exploration and experimentation. I provide structure, goals, and guidelines that allow students to make their own discoveries. Rather than giving all of the lesson information myself, I ask open-ended questions that have many answers. Students can better understand information when they come up with their own answers and have a chance to participate in a discussion with peers and the teacher. My goal as an educator is to help children become successful students and creative problem solvers. Students will perform better in all subjects when they understand how to use their learning styles effectively. Students are more successful when they have the knowledge to solve problems creatively. It is most rewarding for me as an educator to see students to achieve these goals and exceed their own expectations.
