7+ years and counting. 5th - 8th grade middle school math (including Algebra 1), drama and sometimes drawing, though I don't have any official training on the drawing subject.
My core aim is to make math fun. I try to use funny stories, sayings, rhymes, or video game references to help students identify with difficult-to-remember concepts. My theatre background helps a bit in the presentation. I have an ongoing gamification system that I've been using and refining in my classroom. The purpose is to try to make normal, oft-tedious math assignments into "experience points" to allow students to gain levels, achievements, and privileges/prizes.
The only honor I've received are from students and/or their families that don't like math, but told me they like my class anyways.
Undergrad major in Theatre Arts with a minor in Philosophy. I used this combo to think deeply on how a degree in acting wouldn't lead me to a steady job with money to live off of...so, back to school: Masters in Education - Endorsed to teach Elementary and Middle School Math and Drama.
I'm a late-30-something old guy that grew up playing in the woods when it was sunny and playing video games when it wasn't. My once-hidden geekiness now serves me well in connecting with students that, like myself, enjoy dorky things.
