My experience over thirty-five years includes teaching ELA in grades 4-11. I have also taught reading and composition at a community college. My main focus has included American Literature and AP Language and Composition. I have worked on many committees to develop state curriculum and assessment.
I believe that most students will respond well to carefully scaffolded lessons. These should have clearly defined tasks and purposeful outcomes with space for flexibility and creativity. A successful lesson also includes the concept that reading skills should be developed at every level. I also feel that students become more actively engaged when they are given a "road map" for any assignment and a clear understanding of the destination. It is important for them to see significance and value in the effort. My goal has always been to foster a positive classroom climate where students of any level can work at a productive pace without feeling frustrated or defeated.
