TEACHING EXPERIENCE

New York City Teaching Fellow (Cohort 14) about to start my fourteenth year teaching in Brooklyn public schools. Previously, I worked as a teaching apprentice at New Canaan Country School and for Breakthrough New Haven. I have taught 9-12th grade history and special education and have worked as a mentor, department chair, and team leader.

MY TEACHING STYLE

I work in a true public school with students of a wide-range of abilities and backgrounds. I try to make history accessible by scaffolding challenging primary sources and establishing skill-building learning protocols that are used throughout the year. My goal is to help prepare my students for college level work and provide them the necessary tools and information to succeed on the New York State Regents.

MY OWN EDUCATIONAL HISTORY

I was fortunate to receive a scholarship to Hopkins School of New Haven, CT as a teenager. My experiences gave me a unique insight into what a well funded and challenging education can offer. However, I often felt that the voices and perspectives of my learning were limited and one-sided. As an example, as a student I read almost every work of Shakespeare, but only two books by authors of color. I went on to study American Studies and African-American Studies at Wesleyan University and Special Education at Long Island University's Brooklyn Campus. I attempt to bring these past educational experiences into the classroom to help provide my students with a diverse and critical lens of the world and our shared past.
