This syllabus is my own, drafted for audit in 2007. While some of my day-to-day activities have changed, my basic course architecture has not. I use The Bedford Reader (9th Ed.) in the fall and partway through the spring, and then as we prepare for

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I have taught in a northern California school for eleven years and I am known for being a very rigorous, disciplined, and still creative teacher. Like most teachers, I started out in literature, but upon taking over AP Language and Composition in 2005 and the CSU Expository Reading and Writing Course (EWRC) in 2009, my focus these days is much more in reading expository texts and writing/rhetoric of many kinds. Many of the things I will post here have been field-tested by colleagues who are forever coming to me to borrow my "stuff." In the coming months I'll be aligning my materials to the Common Core, specifically to California (but good for everyone), and shortly will begin working as a coach with other departments trying to implement comprehensive writing across the curriculum (WAC).

MY TEACHING STYLE

I teach at a large comprehensive high school, about 50/50 white/Latino. I would like to note that I have fantastic colleagues who contributed mightily to my students' 95% pass rate on the AP test over the last six years.

HONORS/AWARDS/SHINING TEACHER MOMENT

I have been published three times in California English and hope to have a couple of my SF State papers published...later. After they're done and I have graduated and submitted them to the big guns, like English Journal and the like. The Napa Valley Retired Teachers Association has awarded me the Solomon Scholarship twice, to fund my study at SF State.

MY OWN EDUCATIONAL HISTORY

I have a B.A. in English and Anthropology from UC Berkeley, credentials in English and Socal studies and an M.Ed. from UC Santa Barbara, and I'm currently working towards an M.A. in English - Composition Studies at San Francisco State University (projected graduation in 12/2013).

ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

A blog is forthcoming! There you will see how my materials fit into the context of my teaching, and suggest to you how you might organize discrete units or even quarters, semesters, and years of study.
