Description

This syllabus is my own, drafted for audit in 2007. While some of my day-to-day activities have changed, my basic course architecture has not. I use The Bedford Reader (9th Ed.) in the fall and partway through the spring, and then as we prepare for the exam we start reading a trio of titles "located" in present-day Congo: King Leopold's Ghost by Adam Hochschild, Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad, and The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver. Students engage in a wide variety of reading and writing to prepare them for this demanding exam, which is often accepted for "freshman composition" credit at colleges and universities around the U.S. Soon I will be posting companion exercises based on the general outline of this syllabus.
