I am a mid-west girl at heart, having started my teaching career in Bellevue, Nebraska and am currently teaching in Chicago! I must enjoy pre-teens because I have thoroughly enjoyed teaching 5th and 6th grade for the last 7 years. At this time, my instructional focus is math. However, I do have many materials to come from all the middle level content areas!
I love allowing my students to collaborate, communicate, and explore within their learning environment. I believe in being a facilitator in my classroom rather than a lecturer. This leads to many fun and creative activities and projects! Over the last year I have been fortunate to not be required to follow a prescribed curriculum for teaching math. This has allowed me to experience Interactive Notebooks, the Math Workshop format, and creative learning opportunities for my students. I was able to independently delve into the 5th and 6th grade Common Core Math standards and develop materials for my students to use in their learning.
2011 - Received the Curriculum and Instruction Award at my school for my strong implementation of curriculum and creative use of materials to teach standards.
I have my degree in Elementary Education from the University of Nebraska - Omaha. I received my Masters Degree at Doane College in Curriculum and Instruction. I am currently getting a math certification at the University of Chicago!
In addition to being a teacher 24/7, I do share my life with my wonderful husband and two dogs!
